The Road So Far... Carol Christy Scholarship Winners: Madalyn Moore
Over the summer, Marietta Community Foundation has had the privilege of welcoming an intern, Katen Petty, from Marietta College. With the help of our office, Petty was able to test her writing skills and continue a series of articles where we revisit past scholarship winners and ask, ‘Where Are They Now?’ The series was initially created by Jasmine Riggs, a participant of the Civic Leaders Fellowship Program.
The Carol Christy Scholarship enables students to reach their full potential during their college careers. It allows for education without limitations where students can afford their ambition.
Carol Christy Scholarship winner, Madalyn Moore, has continued to make the Foundation proud with her academic accolades. Moore worked diligently to graduate two years early from Ohio University with a Biochemistry degree. She attributed her success to the College Credit Plus Program through Washington State Community College.
“I recommend it [College Credit Plus Program] to everyone. If you have the opportunity, you should definitely do it,” said Moore. “You’re saving time and you’re saving money.”
Moore plans to continue her education at The Ohio State University in the Fall of 2021. She has been accepted into the OSU Ph.D. program in the field of Chemistry.
“I’m most looking forward to doing lab rotations,” she said. “I get to work with my professors to try and find what area I would like to pursue my research project and eventually my thesis in. I am excited to meet people that are passionate about the same things I am.”
The Carol Christy Scholarship funding allowed Moore to continue her education and remain financially stable.
“Since I wasn’t going to be able to use the scholarship to its full potential, they allowed me to use 50% of tuition coverage in my second year of undergrad which was also my last year,” said Moore. “I look around and I see a lot of people who apply themselves in school and are incredibly smart, but debt makes it really hard on them to pursue graduate school.”
At Ohio University, Moore blazed trails when she became the first graduate of the Honors program. She received high praises from the Ohio University Honors Tutorial College dean, Donal Skinner. Skinner described Moore as a leader on campus and an intellectually curious individual. Along with graduating with honors, Moore is involved with other academic honor programs.
“I pledged Alpha Chi Sigma, which is the professional chemistry fraternity and I have been a part of that for two years. It’s a great group of people from different chemistry majors that come together in and out of school,” said Moore, “The money I saved from the Carol Christy Scholarship definitely went to various extracurriculars.”
