50 Years of Community Impact: Recounting MCF’s Anniversary Celebration

Marietta Community Foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary on May 30, 2024, marking a half-century of dedicated service to Washington County. The evening, filled with reflections on past achievements and announcements of new initiatives, showcased the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the community’s well-being.

If you weren’t able to partake in this special evening, here’s what you missed:

A Warm Welcome and Reflection

As the doors opened at 5:00 p.m., friends and neighbors gathered in anticipation. The event commenced with a warm welcome from Heather Allender, President and CEO.

“Thank you for coming,” Allender greeted the audience. “Today, we’re here to commemorate 50 years of Marietta Community Foundation. We’re proud to know that our work has touched every person in Washington County, whether they realize it or not. Additionally, each of you has made an impression on us. A community is a sum of many parts, and every day our individual actions contribute to our collective future.”

Allender’s words resonated with the audience as she spoke about the Foundation’s impact over the years and the collective efforts that drive community growth and development. She emphasized the importance of individual contributions and introduced the evening’s theme of reflection and future planning.

Recognizing Special Guests, a Proclamation, and Community Speeches

Before diving into the announcements of new initiatives, Allender acknowledged the presence of special guests, including current and past board members, and elected officials. This recognition highlighted the collaborative spirit that has been central to the Foundation’s success over the past five decades.

A representative from J.D. Vance’s office presented a proclamation, followed by a speech from Washington County Commissioner Charlie Schilling. Both speakers underscored the Foundation’s significant role in addressing community needs and fostering a spirit of philanthropy.

Introducing the Champions of Philanthropy Program

Courtney Wentz, Communications and Marketing Director, took the stage to announce a new initiative — the Champions of Philanthropy program. “Champions of Philanthropy believe that philanthropy has the power to transform lives and communities,” Wentz explained. “By actively volunteering, making annual contributions to address pressing needs, pledging future support for lasting impact, and sharing their inspiring stories, Champions commit to making a difference today and for generations to come.”

Wentz invited everyone to join this program, emphasizing its goal to honor the past, celebrate the present, and shape a prosperous future for Washington County.

Unveiling the 25 Under 25 Program

Bailey Harlow introduced another exciting initiative, the 25 Under 25 program. This initiative aims to recognize young individuals under the age of 25 who are making significant contributions to Washington County through volunteer work, fundraising, and advocacy.

“Nominations will be accepted from June 1 to September 1, and the results will be announced in November,” Harlow announced. “I encourage everyone to nominate deserving candidates and support these young leaders in their philanthropic efforts. Together, we can celebrate and inspire the next generation of community champions!”

Outstanding Nonprofit of the Year Award

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the "Outstanding Nonprofit of the Year" award by Britani Merritt, Donor and Program Services Director. This year, the honor went to Caring Connection, a small but mighty organization known for its unwavering commitment to the community. Their initiatives, including a revolutionary vehicle repair program and a much-needed diaper program, have addressed critical needs in Washington County.

“Please join me in congratulating Caring Connection for their incredible contributions and dedication,” Merritt announced, prompting spirited applause from the audience.

A Special Tribute

Before Heather Allender delivered the closing remarks, past board member Doug Robinson took the stage to share a heartfelt tribute. Robinson recounted how the late Karen Osborne had encouraged him to join the Board of Directors in the early 2000s. This push led him to an eye-opening and fulfilling experience on the Board.

Robinson commended Allender for her tremendous growth and astute leadership over the years. He highlighted her journey from a part-time employee to the President and CEO of the Foundation, praising her dedication and vision. His words added a personal and inspiring note to the evening, underscoring the impact of committed leadership on the Foundation’s success.

Closing Remarks

The evening concluded with heartfelt closing remarks from Heather Allender. “Thank you all for being here to celebrate this significant milestone with us tonight. As we mark another year of commitment and community impact, your presence and support continue to inspire us.”

Allender invited attendees to capture the moment by adding their photos to the anniversary scrapbook, encouraging everyone to carry forward the spirit of collaboration and dedication that has defined Marietta Community Foundation for the past 50 years.

A Night to Remember

As the event drew to a close, guests left with a renewed sense of community and a shared vision for the future. Marietta Community Foundation’s 50th-anniversary celebration not only honored its rich history but also set the stage for continued impact and growth in Washington County. With new initiatives like Champions of Philanthropy and 25 Under 25, the Foundation is poised to inspire and engage the community for another fifty years of philanthropic excellence.
