Leight and Jane Murray, Warren's Plaza IGA Named 2024 Philanthropy Award Winners

Washington County, OH — With its 2024 Philanthropy Awards, Marietta Community Foundation honors two exceptional philanthropic pairs for their impactful contributions in 2023. Coincidentally, both parties consist of a lifelong resident and a transplant, highlighting diverse backgrounds united in their commitment to this community.

Outstanding Philanthropists of the Year: Leight and Jane Murray

Leight and Jane Murray received the prestigious Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year award. Their journey with the Foundation began in 2004 with a modest donation and grew into a significant, lasting relationship. In 2023, Leight and Jane made commendable contributions, including establishing a donor-advised fund and significantly strengthening an unrestricted fund that supports the greatest needs of our community. Additionally, Jane's behind-the-scenes volunteer work and Leight's dedication to preserving Marietta's heritage through the Civil War Round Table reflect their deep commitment to the community.

Leight Murray expressed his gratitude, saying, "Although Jane grew up in Montana with grizzly bears, she's been a resident of Marietta for 47 years. I was born and raised here, and together, we've known many of the founding fathers of the Foundation. We feel closely tied to the community, especially through those who were crucial in establishing the organization. We've known many board members who have done an outstanding job, and the staff has always been remarkable. We're delighted to be part of this community and to support the Foundation and Marietta. Thank you for this opportunity."

Outstanding Business of the Year: Warren's Plaza IGA

Warren's Plaza IGA, a cornerstone of Marietta's business community, was named Outstanding Business of the Year for its exceptional support of those in need. During the 2023 holiday season, the store secured 500 hams for local food pantries, ensuring many families enjoyed a festive meal. Additionally, store manager Mike Morrison organized a benefit concert featuring country music star Skip Ewing, raising substantial funds for Washington County food pantries. The store routinely donates to Washington County Harvest of Hope, addressing food insecurity in the community.

Owner Kin Brewer shared the philosophy behind their generosity, deeply inspired by his father-in-law, Charles N. Warren. When Kin first moved to the area and joined the business in 1981 as an accountant, he was surprised by the extent of their charitable contributions. He discovered that Charles had given away over $40,000 annually to the community, including support for the Washington County Fair’s 4-H animals. When Kin asked Charles if he was aware of the amount, Charles simply replied, "I give something to everyone that comes in. The community has given me much more."

This commitment to giving back has become a cornerstone of Warren's Plaza IGA’s ethos. Kin, his wife Lisa (daughter of Charles N. Warren), and Mike have continued this tradition, ensuring the store remains a vital supporter of local causes and a beacon of generosity in Marietta.

This year, Warren's Plaza IGA is also celebrating its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades of dedicated service and community support.

Marietta Community Foundation congratulates and thanks Leight and Jane Murray and Warren's Plaza IGA for their extraordinary contributions to our community. Their selfless dedication and commitment to philanthropy embody the spirit of giving that Marietta Community Foundation strives to foster. We are honored to recognize their efforts and look forward to their continued impact on our community.
